Welcome, if you are a new subscriber!

Make room for your car....and more.

We have a crazy amount of stuff in our 2 car garage including:

We are able to store a long list of stuff because we’ve used an organized approach to utilize every inch of space.

Are you embarrassed to open your garage door or do you have trouble parking one car in your garage? Use these four organizing principles to help you make the most of your garage space.

1. Hang it on the wall.

It doesn't matter if you just have exposed studs or drywall. Free up floor space and hang your shovels, brooms, chairs, toys, ladders, and small garden equipment from a nail or from screw-in, rubber coated hooks shown in this link.

How many items can you fit on your garage walls? Be creative!

2. Store it in the rafters.

My dad taught me this organizing rule. During the summer months he would put the snow shovels in the rafters. In the winter he hung the bikes from the rafters and stored the lawn chairs on top of the rafters.

Extra wood pieces, camping stuff, carpet remnants, and just about anything he could hoist above his head while standing on a ladder went into the rafters.

If your rafters aren't exposed you can purchase a handy rack like the one shown on this link to store coolers, outdoor Christmas decorations, and sleds.

3. Add more storage space with shelves and cabinets.

Paint, car supplies and chemicals are safely out of “little ones” hands when place on high shelves or enclosed in a cabinet.

Categorize items on shelves and store in labeled containers. Consider a locked cabinet for more secure storage.

4. Simplify with clearly designated zones.

Stop wasting time looking for things. Categorize and group like things together in designated zones. For instance the trash and recycling containers are near your door, garden supplies are in another zone and sporting equipment grouped together in yet another zone.

Bring your cars back inside by spending a day this summer organizing your garage. Once the cold rain and snow starts falling again, you'll find it was time well spent.
